XVIIth Century ,Italy.
Antique ivory crucifix mounted on a wooden ebony cross and placed on a red onyx marble.
The sculpture of the Christ has an evident Jansenist inspiration and is made with great anatomical care. On the top of the cross is an ivory cartouche Titulus Crucis Inri. The ivory skull inserted into the rich marble base represent the vanitas. At the foot of the cross a female , Maddalena or most likely the virgin Mary is depicted in tears ,the small scupture is executed with particular finesse.
The work as a whole has a refined execution. The contrast of colours red and black and ivory , create an elegant chromatic contrast.
Good conservation.
